The Press is a small community newspaper located in Speedway, Indiana with coverage extending over the entire west side of Indianapolis. Newspapers are published and delivered weekly on Wednesdays.
The office has been home to a couple of feline friends for several years, with local celebrity Bailey the Cat being best known for the Bailey's Buddies section of the paper. Guests can find Bailey lounging in the sun in the front window and many locals come to see Bailey regularly.
The Press traces it’s roots to the West Side Messenger, which was founded in 1915, and the Speedway Town Press, formerly the Suburban Press, which was founded in 1956. A.J. and Shirley Nelson purchased The Press, the west side’s oldest community newspaper, in January 2015.
Shirley has worked in newspaper advertising since 1983 at a newspaper office in Bedford but started working at The Press in 2001 as an advertising director as well as handling various other responsibilities in the office. Shirley is native of Bedford, Indiana.
A.J. has been a reporter and editor at newspaper offices in Bedford, Bloomington, Mooresville, and Martinsville before joining The Press in 2014. A.J. is a Speedway native who was glad to return to his boyhood home. A.J. is also a proud veteran of the U.S. Army.
The Nelson’s have one son together, Jonathon, who attends the Life Skills Class of 2016 at Speedway High School. The family also includes two adult children and several grandchildren.
